Key terms worth knowing before you ride around Hurricane, Utah.

What is enduro?

Enduro is a category of off-road motorcycle riding that combines long-distance endurance with technical trail skills. An enduro bike is a street-legal dirt bike — like our Husqvarna FE350s and FE450 — built for rough single track, rocky climbs, and long days in the saddle rather than closed-course motocross jumps. In practice, enduro means riding varied terrain for hours at a time on a bike that's equally at home on dirt and pavement.

What is single-track?

Single-track is a narrow off-road trail roughly the width of one bike — typically one to two feet wide. It's the most technical and rewarding kind of dirt bike riding, with tight turns, rocks, roots, and ledges. Most of the riding around Hurricane, Utah — Warner Valley, Hurricane Cliffs, Gould's Rim — is single-track, which is why enduro bikes are the right tool here.

What is slickrock?

Slickrock is a regional term for the smooth, wind-polished sandstone bedrock that covers much of Southern Utah. Despite the name, it actually offers excellent traction for dirt bike tires in dry conditions — better than loose dirt in most cases. Slickrock sections appear throughout Warner Valley and Hurricane Cliffs and are one of the defining features of riding here.

What is a street-plated dirt bike?

A street-plated dirt bike is an off-road motorcycle that is registered and licensed for public-road use in addition to trail riding. Every Husqvarna in our rental fleet is street-plated, which means you can legally ride short pavement connectors between trail systems without a trailer. This is a significant advantage in the Hurricane area where trail systems are linked by short stretches of road.

What is BLM land?

BLM land is public land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and generally open to off-road vehicle use on designated trails. The entire 20,000+ acre Warner Valley / Hurricane Cliffs trail system sits on BLM land and is free to ride with a valid Utah OHV Education Certificate. BLM land is distinct from state parks (like Sand Hollow State Park) which have their own access rules.

What is the Utah OHV Education Certificate?

The Utah OHV Education Certificate is a mandatory, one-time certification required for all off-highway vehicle operators in Utah under Utah Code 41-22-31(1)(B), effective January 1, 2023. The course is free, takes about 30 minutes online, includes 26 questions with educational videos, and produces a certificate that is valid for life. You must show proof at rental pickup.
